Optimal Location and Garage Layout for Car Lifts

Many customers often ask us where to install a car stacking lift in their garage. The optimal location is individual and depends on the garage's dimensions, ceiling height, and available space in front and behind the equipment. Several key factors must be considered when selecting a location to ensure efficient, safe, and reliable operation.

Where is the best place to put a car lift?

Choosing the right location for a lift not only helps maintain a clean and organized garage, but also optimizes space utilization, making it easier to access vehicles, tools, and parts.

The location of a car lift is influenced by multiple factors, such as available space, ceiling height, and surrounding infrastructure. Comprehensively evaluating these factors ensures a secure and user-friendly installation.

Assessing Available Space and Clearance

When determining the optimal location for a lift, pay particular attention to the space reserved in front of the lift, which is primarily dependent on the type of boom. If using an asymmetrical boom, it's recommended to position the center of the lift approximately 2.7 to 3 meters from the front wall; if using a symmetrical boom, the recommended distance is approximately 3.6 meters.

  • Adjusting the Distance from the Front Wall

For some models, such as two-post vehicle service lifts with a multi-function boom, the positioning is more flexible. Generally, it's recommended to install the posts approximately 3 meters from the wall. This makes it easier to maneuver the vehicle and avoids maneuvering difficulties. If the site is limited in width but sufficient in depth, the vehicle can be pre-positioned to accommodate the lift.

  • Assessing Space and Clearance

Before selecting a site, carefully assess the available space and clearance. Ensure adequate room for movement and maneuvering based on the size of your vehicle.

  • Matching Vehicle Length to Equipment

If the vehicle is parked diagonally on the lift, some of the vehicle may extend beyond the platform. Since the front of the vehicle occupies approximately 30% and the rear occupies 70%, additional space is required at the rear. If the vehicle is parked forward, the space should be evenly distributed between the front and rear. For example, a vehicle approximately 5.5 meters long only requires approximately 0.9 meters of space in front.

Taking our TPL series hydraulic two-post parking lift as an example, its platform length is approximately 3.9 meters. As long as the vehicle's wheelbase fits within the platform, it can be parked. However, vehicles with longer fronts or rears still require ample clearance in front and behind.

Considerations for Ceiling Height

Ceiling height requirements are another factor that requires careful consideration. Ensure sufficient clearance above the lift to safely and smoothly lift vehicles. Generally, a minimum clearance of 5 to 10 cm is recommended between the top of the vehicle on the upper level and the ceiling.

Concrete Floor Quality and Stability

The quality of the ground at the installation location directly impacts the stability of the equipment. Hydraulic car stackers typically have 12 to 15 cm mounting bolts, so a concrete foundation at least 10 cm thick and meeting C30 strength standards is recommended to ensure a secure installation and safe operation of the lift.

Planning for Efficient Workflow

In addition to the location of the lift itself, the layout of the entire garage or work area should also prioritize accessibility. Ensuring easy access to functional areas, such as tool areas and storage areas, will make vehicle repair and maintenance more efficient.

Garage Door Alignment and Access

Aligning the lift with the garage door significantly improves convenience, such as making it easier to load vehicles onto trailers or allowing forklifts to maneuver smoothly within a pallet racking system.
